Start at the Old Post Office, a local landmark at 55 Mill Street, Almonte. Roll downhill to Main Street and turn right. Cross the river and head east to the traffic circle at the corner of March Road and Appleton Side Road. Turn right, and follow your map for all or part of this “Century” ride.
The grand dame of Bicycle Month routes, this trip winds through the streets of Almonte and all four Miss Mills hamlets: Appleton, Blakeney, Clayton and Pakenham. You’ll cross the Mississippi River four times and the Indian River three times. Scenery varies from flat fertile farmland to rocky Canadian Shield with rolling hills and vistas. Highlights include a stop at the Mill of Kintail, stone farmsteads, the Five Arch Stone Bridge at Pakenham and rapids at the bridge in Blakeney. Drop in for refreshments at the general stores in Clayton or Pakenham. Appleton’s North Lanark Historical Museum runs a Tea Room on the weekends.
