Come and support your community as Mississippi Mills issues the Silver Chain Challenge to mayors and reeves of Lanark County.
On Tuesday, May 24, 2011 from 8:00-9:00 a.m. outside the Almonte Old Town Hall, Mayor Levi invites you to a free breakfast of cereal, fruit and Equator coffee. To add to the party atmosphere, the Ramsay Women’s Institute will be on hand with their peddle-powered smoothie maker.
Lanark Mayors Slow Bicycle Race
You’ve heard of ’slow food’ and ‘slow travel’; the mayors of Lanark will compete in the first annual ‘Lanark Mayors Slow Bicycle Race’. All in good fun, this slow race (you can’t put down your feet nor travel in circles) will test the agility of our local political leaders. Come out and cheer on your mayor and watch just how slowly the wheels of government can turn.
What is the Silver Chain Challenge?
The Silver Chain Challenge is a friendly competition to see which town or hamlet in Lanark County is the most cycling-spirited community. It’s about riding your bike for fun or transportation, and registering your kilometres for the month of June.
Who Can Participate in the Silver Chain Challenge?
- If you ride a bike and you live in Lanark County, you can participate. Every kilometre registered will help your community win the 2011 Silver Chain.
- The challenge is open to all ages, with bonus points awarded to helmet wearers, children under 16, adults over 65, and riders who choose their bikes over their cars.
How Do I Participate?
- Register your name and community on the Mississippi Mills Bicycle Month website www.mmbicyclemonth.ca (This information will not appear on the website.)
- From June 1 to June 30, return to the website to log your kilometres.
Who will win the 2011 Silver Chain?
At the end of June, the community with the most points will be awarded the Silver Chain, and bragging rights as the most cycling-spirited community in Lanark County for 2011.
What the 2010 Silver Chain Challenge Winner Is Saying
Mississippi Mills won the title in 2010 with 50 registered riders cycling 12,328 kms. Mayor John Levi is confident that Mississippi Mills residents will rise to the challenge again. “We look forward to the challenge of all others, but our motto is “WE WILL NOT BE DEFEATED.”
To win, choose your bike and log your efforts for short jaunts or long rides.
You will be helping the environment, yourself, and your community.
Happy riding
